Robert Woolner

Artforms drawing painting
Region North West
My work is concerned with exploring the grid, colour, light and atmosphere. I aim to make quiet contemplative work and smaller, more textural pieces in mixed media which act as drawings for larger work. I revisit themes and usually work in series, fascinated by the possibilities contained in a small piece of information. Other references include plans, maps, natural and found objects. Biographical notes Woolner was born in Jamaica in 1946 and trained at Camberwell. He has lived and worked in Dorset for 50 years. At Camberwell his tutors incuded Frank Auerbach and Euan Uglow and drawing was central. In the sixties Woolner was influenced by American Abstract Expressionists and his paintings have moved towards abstraction. He has exhibited widely in group exhibitions including the RA, RWA, Bournemouth University and Russell Cotes. Since 1991 he has held at least one solo show each year. Venues include Dorset, London and the British Embassy in Paris. His work features in the FISHBAR publication ROBERT WOOLNER WORKS 2000 - 2016, commentary by John Renner, also in Reinventing the Landscape - Canterton Books and 50 Wessex Artists published by Evolver.
