The Directory
John Goodliffe
My work tends to the philosophical. The observer is encouraged to enter into a dialogue with the pieces; ask questions; consider meaning. My inspiration often comes from tribal and early medieval art, so is perhaps not surprising that there is a didactic element. But it must also stand on its own, without cultural baggage.
Illustrated are a) two details frome 'Stele', a carving about light and dark; b) 'Trembler', inspired by a Papaya New Guinea canoe bailer, and c) a gargoyle, copied from Amiens. This later is a little emasculated, as it now supports two hanging baskets!
I also do architectural stonework and letter cutting.
