Billie Willcocks

Painter

Going to Provence a few years back - we discovered the Ochre Quarries at Roussillon. This made a great impact on my painting. The vibrancy and wide range of beautiful pigments gave the life and luminosity to my work that I had been striving for.
The amazing thing is that I have lately discovered that my Great Grandfather also made regular trips to these same quarries in Provence years ago and invented and developed Carpet Dyes using the same pigments I now use. He went to Provence each year, and supported a family of 13 children on the Royalties!

Additional Information

I rarely plan my work, preferring it to develop spontaneously - although I usually have a fair idea of how it needs to take form. When out sketching, I use diagrams of shapes and composition - putting colour and ideas for later work from scribbled memos
My studio is in a beautiful garden where I am fortunate to have plenty of inspiration and tranquillity; I love to work outside, especially along the coastline.
It is a constant struggle to achieve something new and exciting and I try to use different techniques and ideas as much as possible to this end.
Although I work in watercolour, gouache and acrylics - mixed media and oils are my preferred mediums, particularly using pigments from the ochre quarries of Provence!
I seem to have a need to paint, and think myself fortunate to be in a position to do so.
